Subject: Machine Lost Config File

Hi

When I started a KmotionCNC machine today, I got a message "cannot find config file", The KMotionCNC screen launched but in a different format will all the settings gone. When I looked into the Tool Setup tab, the paths to the setup and tool table files were blank too.

So now the questions is: Which file is the config file? Can the config file be restored? Is it backed up somewhere?

I looked at the posts to see that most of the files are located in the /KMotion/Data directory and I see some backup files there such as GodeConfig.txt.bak. Is this the file to be restored?

Thanks

I checked and the correct message given was: "Configuration File could not be properly loaded on Startup". I check the log file and it shows that the program was terminated the previous day. I check the config file with Notepad and it is readable but does not look complete. So I am not sure what caused this. I cannot see any problem on the computer or disk which would cause some of the information in the config file to disappear.

Any idea on how to recover the config file?

while we wait for a definitive answer from Tom:
There should be two config files in your KMotion\Data directory. These are
    GCodeConfig.txt
    GCodeConfigCNC.txt

The second file, GCodeConfigCNC.txt is the config file for KMotionCNC. However, if it's missing, then the program will use GCodeConfig.txt, but you will lose some of your settings if this happens.

I do not believe that KMotion/KMotionCNC automatically creates backups of either of these. Hopefully you have a backup of your files somewhere that you can restore these from.

Moral of the story for readers - if you're not already backing up the PC you're using for a controller, do it now. If you can't bring yourself to do that, grab a flash drive and back up the two config files.

    Well said.

But actually GCodeConfig.txt is for KMotion.exe.  GCodeConfigCNC.txt is for KMotionCNC.exe

Later Versions of KMotionCNC also write a backup file called GCodeConfigCNC.txt.bak.  But KMotionCNC should prompt you to use it if the primary has a problem and the backup exists.

    Thanks Tom

When I launch KMotionCNC, I get the message: "Tool Table not found". The screen which launches was not the Dialog Face I set up and when I look into the Tool Setup settings, there are no paths for the tool table or the config file. When I then close the application I get the message: "Config file could not be properly loaded on Startup, Would you like to save?" I have not saved as I do not want to overwrite anything.

I have renamed that GCodeConfigCNC.txt.bak to GCodeConfigCNC.txt but it did not make any difference.

I checked the Default.tbl and it is where it should be and looks OK. So I don't know why it cannot be found. Any idea?

    Hi Eon,

If you lost all of your configuration then the File to use as the Tool Table is probably blank and of course can not be found.  See:

    http://dynomotion.com/Help/KMotionCNC/ToolSetupScreenFiles.htm

Specify the location of the Tool Table File you want to use.

You will either need to locate a backup of a valid GCodeConfigCNC.txt file or re-enter all the values on the Tool Setup Screens manually.

Thanks, I opened the Tool Table in Notepad and it is fine. I can also not see any obvious problems with the GCodeConfigCNC. So this is puzzling.
